I like brownies. Not love them, exactly, and they wouldn’t ever be my first choice for cake or dessert, but there is definitely something about their rich chocolaty-ness that is very satisfying! (Edited: I’ve come a long way since I originally wrote this post – brownies are now one of my favourite desserts!).
These chocolate orange brownies are delicately flavoured with orange and topped off with a tangy orange drizzle. Although you’d never know it, they have a little less sugar than a more traditional brownie. This gives them a slightly firmer consistency, but without losing any of the taste. Perfect!
Rich Chocolate Orange Brownies with an Tangy Orange Drizzle
105g (3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons) all-purpose (plain) flour
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon orange flavouring
70g (2/3 cup) icing (confectioners' sugar)
1 - 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
~ Prepare a brownie or cake tin. I used a 27cm x 27cm (10" x 10") baking dish, but the brownies were quite thin. If you want them thicker, use a slightly smaller pan and adjust your baking times accordingly. Pre-heat the oven to 175°C (350°F).
~ Melt the butter and then mix in the cocoa. Add both sugars until thoroughly combined.
~ Beat in the eggs and orange flavouring.
~ Sift the flour and fold in carefully.
~ Bake for around 20-25 minutes until ready (outsides should be firm, with the middle a little softer).
~ Leave to cool on a wire rack.
~ In the meantime, prepare the drizzle by sifting the icing sugar into a bowl and adding 1 tablespoon of the orange. Slowly add more until it reaches the required consistency. Drizzle over brownies. Enjoy!
